In March 2024, Mantis secured £326,250 of funding to help 17 Diocese of Manchester schools advance decarbonisation activities toward their 2030 net zero target.
This funding was essential for progressing decarbonisation projects at scale and allowed for the detailed plan and funding applications of projects exceeding £10m in value.
Challenges

Developing decarbonisation strategies across a diverse school estate with varying building ages and conditions.

Carrying out intrusive investigations while minimising disruption to teaching and learning.

Designing mechanical and electrical systems for low carbon heating in constrained school environments.

Coordinating utility infrastructure upgrades to ensure sufficient electrical capacity for low-carbon electric heating systems.

Our Approach
Mantis adopt SALIX and Energy Systems Catapult standards on planning and develop decarbonisation projects in public building sector estates.
- STRATEGY STAGE: Production 17x Heat Decarbonisation Plans, assessing viability and funding options.
- FEASIBILITY STAGE: The production of feasibility studies for 10x Schools to finalise commercial and technical specifications.
- DESIGN STAGE: RIBA Stage 4 Level detailed mechanical and electrical design for 4x Primary Schools.
- Funding Applications: Completion of Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) applications for multiple school decarbonisation projects.

Outcomes

Secured PSDS funding for 4 schools within the Trust.

Delivered detailed design stage mechanical and electrical designs, ready for contractor construction phase.

Enabled the replacement of fossil fuel heating systems with air-to-air heat pump technology.

Provided the Trust with long-term carbon and cost savings while aligning with its net zero ambitions.

- Building fabric detailed design (RIBA Stage 4): Floorplans, elevations, section drawings, details, specifications
- Building services detailed design (RIBA Stage 4): Heating, ventilation, public health services, Electrical infrastructure upgrade works
- Project management planning: CDM Regulations, Construction phase plan, Comprehensive tender documents and procurement
- Full planning application submission
